Everyday Skin Care: Choosing Gentle Products

A simple routine and a few label-reading habits go a long way for comfortable skin.
Good everyday skin care does not need a long list of products. A short, steady routine is usually easier to keep and easier to judge.
Start with the basics. Gentle cleansing, a moisturiser that suits your skin, and sun protection in the morning are the usual building blocks. Skin differs from person to person, so what suits a friend may not suit you.
Protect from the sun. Sunscreen is used on the parts of the skin that are exposed, and it is applied again as the directions on the pack say, especially after swimming or sweating. Shade and clothing help too.
Read the label. Look at the list of ingredients, the directions, the warnings and the expiry date, and note any ingredient you know you react to. If your skin is sensitive, products marked as fragrance-free or for sensitive skin may be more comfortable, although a label is not a guarantee.
Try something new carefully. Introduce one new product at a time, and test it first on a small area of skin as the directions suggest, so you can tell which product caused a reaction if one appears.
Keep it simple for children and babies. Choose products made for their age and follow the instructions on the pack.
See a doctor when needed. If you have persistent redness, pain, itching, a rash that spreads, or a change in a mole, see a doctor rather than trying more products.
